Introduction to the Archive of Watermark Images
Contents of this Introduction to the Archive of Watermark Images:
The Archive of Watermark Images is the graphical component of a new "Electronic Briquet" for papers found in Greek manuscripts. In conjunction with the Database of Paper Descriptions and the Bibliographical Database, it is intended to be a resource for publishing and researching papers found in later and post-Byzantine Greek manuscripts. The objectives of this Archive of Watermark Images are
- to enable scholars to search for watermarks which match those found by them in other manuscripts
- to exploit the advantages of the electronic medium for study, comparison and reproduction of watermark images
- to serve as a medium of publication of newly discovered watermarks in Greek manuscripts
- to facilitate the central project of contemporary Greek paleography, namely, the identification of scribes and centers of book production and the reconstruction of their work.

The number of watermarks available for viewing in the Archive of Watermark Images is increasing daily, and will soon number several hundred. We hope to have the full archive of watermark images from Philotheou Monastery codices 1-100 on line by the end of September, 1995.
- NOTE: Some of the images require corrections and reorientation to an upright position; your patience is requested during this installation period.
In the meantime, we encourage you to check out the Temporary Index to the Watermark Database in order to
- see what watermarks have been put on line so far
- get an impression of the quality of the watermark images published in this medium
- experiment with comparing some of the watermark twins
- try downloading watermark images and printing them up at true size
You might also like to have a look at
- the complete List of Watermarks in the Watermark Archive (to see what will soon be available here from the Philotheou Monastery catalog project),
- the What's New page (for information about new developments).
