"Women's Hockey Starts Fast as they Blast Mt. Holyoke and Beat UMaine"

The Bates Women's hockey team got off to a fast start to the season with big wins over Mount Holyoke College and the University of Maine. The Bobcats' record dropped to 2-1 with a loss to the University of Connecticut last Sunday.
The women's club team opened the season with a dominating 7-0 road win over Mount Holyoke. Emily Bectold '13, Kathleen Boyland '11, Shauna Mulvihill '12, Lauren Slipp '10 and Kara Sullivan '10 all scored for the Bobcats. Goalie Chelsea Bolton '12 earned the shutout as she played a flawless game in the net. In a non-league match against the Unviersity of Maine last Saturday, Bates dropped the Black Bears with a resounding 4-1 victory. Racehl Laaff '10 scored two goals for Bates in the team's home opener.
Bates lost its first game of the season on Sunday against the University of Connecticut. Fatigue was a factor as the team traveled four fours to Storrs, CT, to play its second game in less than 24 hours.
The team plays a non-traditional doubleheader with Northeastern this weekend. The teams will meet at the Underhill Arena at 2:30pm on Saturday before heading south the Massachusetts to face off at 11:15am.

UConn 4, Bates 2
The Bobcats lost 4-2 at UConn Sunday. After a well-played but scoreless first period, Bates gave up two goals late in the second. Down 3-0 midway through the third period, Bates fought back with two quick goals by Annie Cravero '13 and Kara Sullivan '10. Sammi Landino '13, Eve Boonseng '11, and Kathleen Boyland '11 all chipped in with an assist. UConn scored once more with 4:36 left in the game to put the final score at 4-2.

Bates defeated UMaine Orono the Bobcats' first home game of the season. Rachel Laaff '10 opened the scoring in the second period, followed by a goal by Lauren Slipp '10. Diane Brackett '11 got her first goal of the season in the third period, followed quickly by another goal by Rachel Laaff. Emily Bechtold '13 contributed 2 assists, while Eve Boonseng '11 and Kathleen Boyland '11 each had one assist. UMaine capitalized on a power play opportunity with 5 minutes left, ending the game at 4-1.

Bates 7, Mount Holyoke 0
HOLYOKE, MA - In the Bobcats' first game of the season, Bates defeated Mount Holyoke 7-0. Chelsea Bolton '12 got a shutout her first game in net, and Emily Bechtold '13 kicked off her Bates career with two goals. Goals from Kara Sullivan '10, Kathleen Boyland '11, Shauna Mulvihill '12, and Lauren Slipp '10 rounded out the scoring.
