Translations 2011

Welcome to Translations 2011!
The Second International Poetry Festival provided our community the experience of diversity from an international perspective as well as a better understanding of the local community. The languages departments, committed to cultivating understanding across cultures, once again hosted the festival. Poets gathered to perform in the languages of origin, students and faculty delved into the work through the act of translation, staff photographers, writers and web designers gifted their time and creativity to make of the festival a moment of learning, exchanging, and dialoguing across cultures. This year we incorporated three speakers, Jane Costlow, Enrique Yepes and Rafael Carpintero Ortega, whose talks gave us a deeper understanding of our community’s location and history, of the meaning of Festival, and the role of translators. We invite you to listen.
The poets brought with them their culture, personalities, sensibilities. As they visited classrooms, shared meals with faculty and students, interacted with staff, memorable exchanges took place; exchanges that fostered friendships, alliances, understandings, projects of collaboration. In other words, cross-cultural communication happened.
Once again, we thank the poets that participated this year, and the faculty and students whose translation acts opened the event to the wider community. We also acknowledge and are grateful for the contributions that made this event possible. We encourage you to peruse our credits page in order to get an idea of the scope of this project. Please, check back with us often as we continue to add to our site!
