Bates took third place at the Division III New England Championships hosted by MIT this past weekend. Brett got things started on Thursday and Friday by winning the Decathlon with 6,162 points, qualifying provisionally for nationals. Also on Friday, Ethan's discus throw of 162-10, a seven foot PR, was good for the win.
On Saturday, amidst two lightning delays, the team did not fare as well as hoped in some areas, but there were a few exceptional performances. Pless, Ethan, and Murtagh, respectively, swept the top three spots in the shot, helped by a strong performance from Murtagh. Jarrett had one heck of a day, placing fourth in the 110 hurdles in 15.06, the second fastest time ever by a Bates athlete. He also ran a solid 56.23 in the 400 hurdles.
While he did not score, Big Red should be commended for running 9:40 in the steeple, dropping seven seconds off of his previous best. Also, despite only placing eighth, Barron ran a killer time of 3:56.21 in the 1500, just besting teammate Tom Esponette's time of 3:56.37 from last weekend.
