Bates Captures Convincing State Title

In the perennially exciting indoor state meet, the Bates men turned things up a notch and captured the team crown for the first time in four years, outscoring the hosting Bowdoin team 196 to 143. Among many outstanding performances, Ethan's throw of 54' 8.25" in the shot put not only earned him the state title, but surpassed Dustin Gauthier's former school record of 53' 4.5" by over a foot, and was just over an inch shy of the automatic national qualifying standard. Murtagh also continued his stellar season by capturing the state title in the weight, setting a meet record of 60' 7.25" and earning the Peter Goodrich Award for most outstanding field performance.

For the throwers' dominance, however, credit really has to be given to the entire squad. David Pless had a monster evening, placing second in the weight and shot, with career bests in both events. Elliot also posted his best marks in both events, placing fifth and sixth.

Noah put on quite the show in the 3000, accepting the lead at the beginning of the race, at first letting the pack sit on him through a comfortable pace. He gradually sped things up, until, with 400 to go he dropped his pursuers, who were right on his shoulder, and flew to an 8:40 finish, with a six second margin of victory over Bowdoin's Alex Williams. Graham and Taska also ran well in the 3000, both running PR's and finishing fourth and seventh, respectively. Elmo's performance in the 5000 also demands mention, as he eclipsed his former PR of 16:05 with his sixth place 15:42 finish, almost catching Wortham and Jag.

LePage and Espo both had dominant races, LePage in the 800, and Espo in the 1000, each of them leading their respetive races from the gun and holding on for impressive 1:55 and 2:31 victories. The 55 Hurdles also went quite well, with Jarret and Tony taking the top two spots in 7.90 and 8.00, respectively.
