Bates Nipped by Bowdoin at States

The Bates men put up a real fight today at the state meet, in which they fell to Bowdoin, 23-36. The meet truly was a duel between Bates and Bowdoin, as USM, the third place teem, had 80 some points, and the top 9 finishers were from Bates and Bowdoin. The front of the race was indicative of things to come, as Noah was outkicked by Bowdoin's Coby Horowitz, both finishing in 25:43, beginning what could be an intense rivalry for years to come. Bowdoin's Stan Berkow was in third in 25:53, with Devin in fourth at 25:57. Bowdoin took spots five and six, but, making up for the lack of Wortham, who precautionarily took the weekend off due to some foot trouble, Tully stepped it up and ran 26:16, finsuhing seventh. Sean had a monster race, finishing ninth in 26:25, only 42 seconds off of our top runner, as opposed to 76 last week.

Tom closed out the scoring for the team, finishing 14th in 26:52, with Sweetums right behind in 15th/26:53. Grimball and Grimball came in behind them, running 26:59, and Elmo was right there in 27:02. I don't have the results on me, so I apologize for the lack of specifics after Elmo, but Jamie had a particularly good race, running about 30 seconds faster than last week. Tristan also capped off his collegiate cross country career with style by putting the hurt on Coach Fresh's son in the final straightaway.

The team has this next weekend off, and will utilize the upcoming October break to freshen up before the NESCAC and regional championships.
