Terrier Invite/USM Invite 1/26/2013
Bates put up strong performances

The Bates College Bobcats benefit from strong competition and a fast track at Boston University, posting
a plentitude of improved marks.

A great day started with the Bobcat milers. James “Stag” Lepage was first to race. Despite a sluggish
pace over the first 800, the pace ratcheted up and Stag was able to battle back to a 4:15 PR, a Bates
team leading mark. In the next heat Mac Stansel, showed extreme tenacity battling against a pair of
Division I UCONN runners. With a physical final stretch, Mac was able to squeeze between the runners
and take second. As Coach Fresh preaches, with good racing come good times. As usual Coach was right.
Mac raced to a 4:12, Bates’ sixth best mark all-time and a new team leading time. Nick Barron also ran
well for the Bobcats, racing to a 4:17.

Bowdoin/Tufts/Bates Invites
Bates doing well in early season meets

Two early season meets prove that Bates is ready to go

The Bowdoin invite and Tufts invite have taught us that:

The throwers are just as dominant this year as years past. Pless and Enos have already posted marks
in the shot put that will most likely send them to Nationals. Pless has also posted a mark in the weight
throw that will travel.

Hurdles are once again a strong event for the Bobcats. Hauser and Hardison took second and third place
at the Tufts meet, and still await the return of “Malibu” McKallagat and Chraley Kenyon.

Mid-distance races will continue to be a strength for the Bobcats with the likes of James Lepage, Nick
Barron, Mac Stansel, Mark Farva, M B-I, converted nordic skier Tweet, and a strong pack of freshman
already posting impressive times.

NCAA 11/17/2012
Bates takes 6th at Nationals!

Tully shines as team improves upon last year’s Nationals performance

After being denied the honor of New England’s top team at the NESCAC and Regional championships,
Bates earned the honor at the season’s most important race. Bates’ sixth place finish at the NCAA
championships in Terra Haute, Indiana led all New England teams, and improved upon Bates’ seventh
place finish last year. The Bobcats were led by Tully Hannan’s All-American performance. Tully’s fifth
place finish is the best individual finish since Justin Easter in 2002, and is the second best finish all-time
for the Bobcats. Bates’ other racers left it all on the course in their last race of the season, fueled by the
support of a strong group of teammates, alumni, and parents that made the 18 hour drive from the east
coast to Indiana.

NESCAC 10/27/2012
Bates gets fourth at NESCACs

Bates’ performance at NESCACs was highlighted by the selection of three runners to the all-NESCAC teams. Big Red placed sixth to earn first team honors, while Andrew Wortham and Tully Hannan placed in the top 14 to earn second team honors. Team scores were highly contested, with many of the country’s top teams hailing from the NESCAC conference. While the team ran well, the results were a disappointment for the highly motivated Bobcats. In the weeks to come, Bates will strive to race better at the ECAC championships and the Regional National qualifying meet

Bates’ seasonal success continued into the State of Maine meet, where the Bobcats once again beat all the competition that they faced. Bates took six of the top ten places, to narrowly edge out rival Bowdoin College by one point. The Bates men were led by Big Red, who continues to have an outstanding junior season.

The rolling hills of Pineland Farms were host to the most competitive dual meet in Division III this weekend between fifth ranked Bates College and seventh ranked Tufts University. Bates had a monstrous day, leaving seventh ranked Tufts University far behind. Bates athletes took four of the top five places and put nine runners before Tufts’ fifth man. In a meet where the top ten athletes from each team contribute to scoring, Bates beat Tufts by a margin of 41 points (85-126). Bates’ top four also posted the four best times by Bates athletes ever at Pineland Farms.

The no.4 nationally ranked bobcats preserved their undefeated record at the Pop Crowell Invite with

In the Junior/Senior race, All-American mid-distance runners James Lepage and Noah Graboys led the way for the Bobcats, covering a challenging last mile in 5:04 and 5:06 respectively to put away the competition. Lepage and Graboy’s heel-striking teammates didn’t run too shabby either, helping Bates take seven of the top eight places in the Junior/Senior race. Mid-distance runners in the Freshman/Sophomore race also shined. 800 meter runners John “Mac” Stansel and Cam Black-Ingersoll led the way for the Bobcats

NESCAC Championship Meet 4/28./2012
Bates Wins NESCACs

For the first time in years, the NESCAC Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship did not have a pre-meet favorite to bring home the team title. With the team title up for grabs, every team fielded their best team and all eleven NESCAC schools gunned for the prized team title. By the midpoint of the meet, however, it was clear that only four teams had what it took to win: Tufts, Middlebury, Williams, and Bates.

Outdoor State Meet 4/21/2012
Bates Wins State Meet

Bates revenges a 4 point loss to Bowdoin Indoors to claim the Outdoor State team title for the 10th time in 11 years.

Bates outlasted Bowdoin by just 13 points to claim the championship and remain undefeated outdoors. Bates’ defeat of Bowdoin adds another worthy scalp to their collection that already includes the likes of MIT, UMO, UNH, USM, Colby, Worchester State, Fitchburg State, etc.

Excellent depth is the only way to describe the team’s performance this weekend at the Jim Sheenan Memorial Track Meet at Fitchburg State College. Despite an exhausting last week of classes and looming finals, Bates athletes still found the energy to outperform their competition, winning the meet by a margin of over 100 points and proving that the Bates team is an elite force in New England Track and Field.

Bates Wins First Meet

Bates opens outdoor season with victory over two Division I teams

While most New England track programs travelled south for their season opening meets, Coach Fresh once again proved his genius when he sent his track team two hours north in late March. While the rest of New England suffered rain, wind, and freezing temperatures, Bates enjoyed ideal racing conditions in northern Maine. Bates took advantage of the sunny, warm, windless day recording great season opening times and marks, beating the Division I programs of the University of New Hampshire and the University of Maine in the process.

Nationals 3/9-10/2012
Bates Finishes 9th at Nationals

Five Athletes, Six All-American awards, Two broken National Meet Records, One National Champion, and the list of Bates’ successes at nationals seems to go on ad infinitum. The Distance Medley Relay team of Nick Barron, Ben Levy, James Lepage, and Noah Graboys were the first “skinnies” to qualify for Track Nationals since Adam Macbeth ran the hurdles in 2006, and they did not squander their opportunity. Barron who led off with the 1200m leg ran tactically for Bates, never losing contact with the lead pack. For those at the meet and for those watching at home, Barron showed off his dirty mullet on the nationally broadcast event for 3:06 before handing off to Ben Levy who managed the tight and flat turns of the Grinnell University track before handing off to James Lepage 51 seconds later. James, also sporting a mullet and a ‘stache that has not been groomed since 2011, ran a superb 800m leg for the bobcats closing 20 meters on the leaders and handing off in contention of first place. Noah ran the anchor leg, running against some of the strongest runners in all of Division 3. Noah did more than hold his own, at times in the last 200 meters contending for the lead and ultimately finished third. David Pless, once again competed like a superhuman, became only the second Bates Track athlete to earn two All-American awards at one championship. Peter Goodrich, in 1989, was the only other athlete to achieve the feat. Pless placed fifth in the weight throw throwing 63’ 2.75”, his first All-American award in the discipline. In the second day of competition Pless also defended his national title in the shot put, breaking the National Meet record twice in the process. Each time he broke the record, it had to be confirmed with a metal tape measure. After breaking the national meet record for a second time, members of the crowd began to chant “metal tape” on each of his remaining throws. Pless’ throw of 60’6.5” was enough to win the championship and break his own school record by almost two feet. Next after a period of off-season training, Bates will attend its first outdoor meet on March 31 at the University of Maine.

ECAC Championship 3/3/2012
Bates Wins ECAC Championship

ECAC Champs! YAY Men

Two weeks after winning their first New England Division III team title, Bates wins again! The two day meet started strongly for the Bobcats. During the first day of competition, David Pless once again proved he is one of the best throwers in the country, winning the shot put by over seven feet. Pless’ tremendous first throw of 16.85m easily placed him ahead of his competition and gave him the opportunity on his remaining throws to really go for a personal best and the ECAC record. He achieved both – breaking his own PR and school record by over seven inches and the ECAC record by almost two feet when he threw 17.94m (58’10.25”) in the finals. Also Rookie Sean Enos continues to throw beyond his years – placing third with a heave of 15.65m (51’4.25”).

Open New Englands 2/25/2012
Bates Has Impressive Showing at Open New Englands

David Pless'13 broke his indoor shot record once again, finishing first among D3 athletes with a throw of 58-2.5. Pless also finished second among D3 athletes in the weight throw with a throw of 59-9.5.

The 5k runners all had good races. Michael Martin'14 won the first heat of the 5k with a time of 14:49, narrowly out-kicking a guy from Central Connecticut. Andrew Wortham'13 was close behind, finishing with a time of 14:53. Noah Graboys'14 ran in the second heat of the 5k, finishing with a time of 14:43.

Isaiah Spofford'15 ran a great 200 time of 22.48, the fastest 200 time for Bates this year.

James LePage'13 set a new pr in the indoor 800 with a time of 1:54.08.

The 4x800 team(Barron, Stansel, Yangani, Corcoran) nearly missed the Bates record, but will be attempting to break it next weekend at ECACs.

The B DMR ran a great time of 10:03, finishing second among D3 teams.

New England Div. III Championship 2/18/2012
Bates Wins NE DIII Championship

In one of the Bates men's best all-time overall performances, the team overcame all odds to win the New England D3 championship for the first time in history.

There were few standout performances - the team was remarkably uniform in rising above everyone's expectations (except our own), as Bates athletes repeatedly came from "not expected to place" to finish well into the top four or five. This is usually the case in a few events week-to-week, but this weekend, it happened across the board and the results were plain to see.

Just a few of the highlights:

David Hardison, Eric Wainman, and Chris Halsted started the meet with a strong Day 1 in the heptathlon, and all went on to place, taking spots 2, 5, and 7, respectively.

Tony and Jarret placed 3-4 in the hurdles, and Isaiah was 3rd in the 60.

Not long after, James LePage came back and set a new school record in the 1000, running a time of 2:27.9.

David Pless’13 finished second at the meet, first among D3 athletes, in the shot put with a throw of 55-.75

State of Maine Championship
Bates Edged by Bowdoin At State of Maine

An exceptional performance for the Bates men was ultimately overshadowed by a 6-point deficit to rivals Bowdoin College in one of the most competitive meets in recent memory.

Bates got its usual strong start behind a 1-3 finish in the weight for Pless and Sean Enos. Pless would go on to set a new meet record in the shot at 58'1", though his final throw of over 59'6" was disallowed for a foul.

In other events, Bates went toe-to-toe with Bowdoin all the way through, led by wins in the 4x800 Blackout Relay, Noah in the 3000 and Eric Wainman in the high jump. In the 60m hurdles, Tony, Jarret, David Hardison, and Charley Kenyon went 1-2-3-5 in a dominant performance.

Team gets things started at UMO

After snow was dumped on much of New England on Friday, it was looking uncertain whether a meet would be possible this weekend, but thankfully the team was able to get things started in a dual meet with UMaine on Sunday. The meet was unscored, but offered Bates the opportunity to compete with some solid Division I athletes, against whom our men faired well, winning seven events. Just taking a cursory look performances that stand out as commendable to me:

Duncan threw 191-9 in the jav, winning the event and giving him the second best all-time mark by a Bates athlete with the current weight.

Pless won the Shot and Disc, eclipsing his former best in the Disc with a throw of 150-2.

Elmo ran an admirable 32:51 in the 10,000 in his first attempt at the event.

Myles ran a strong double, running a personal best 4:15 1500 and coming back for a 2:05 800.

Tony and Jarret went 1-2 in the 110 hurdles, in 15.66 and 15.69, respectively.

There were plenty of other performances worth mention, which one can find in the results. These are just a few that stuck out. As the fist meet of the season, it shows that the Bates men are getting into form and ready to crush things down the road.

Hey Folks, sorry I've been delinquent in getting things updated, I've been without internet and preoccupied for much of the last few weeks. Thankfully, the official site has great news coverage, and now I have some great supplemental material thanks to Ira Waldman. The past three weeks have been filled with some outstanding performances, culminating with the team's second place finish at ECAC's down in New York. Chris Murtagh's ECAC Winning, Automatic National Qualifying Weight Throw of 63' 9"

Ethan Waldman's First of Two 53' 1.75" Throws That Won Him the ECAC Shot Put Title.

Tully was awarded the honor baton for his 8:34 victory in his first 3000 of the season, which put him fifth on the Bates all-time list in the event. read more...

Bates Shows Strength at Home

Despite only fielding about two thirds of the team, the Bates men demonstrated that they are capable of great things this season. The meet was highlighted by a number of strong individual performences in which athletes were finally able to showcase the work they've done over the past year. David Pless received the honor baton for his impressive marks of 15.41m in the weight and 14.97m in the shot. Along with Pless, Murtagh and Ethan led the throwers with wins in the Weight and Shot, with throws of 18.60 and 15.78 m, respectively. It was sick. read more...

It's Track Season!

Unfortunately, amidst finals and other obligations, I neglected to update the website on events such as Devin's appearance at nationals and Brett's win at the Bates Pentathlon. Between positive performances at the pentathlon, and at recent time trials and throw-offs, things are looking quite promising for the team. We're all on break now, getting rest and an academic reprieve, but not without a healthy dose of training. The full team will get things going when we return in January, with two consecutive meets at home on the 15th and 22nd.

Bates Fifth at Regionals; Devin Qualifies for Nationals

The team had its best showing in years at regionals, placing fifth out of 49 teams. While the team was unfortunately not selected to compete at nationals, Devin will be representing the team there next weekend thanks to his ninth place individual finish. I'm a bit pressed for time, and not sure I have much to contribute beyond what's on the official site, but I'll at least say that our top four all had phenomenal races, all earning all region honors, and our five through seven all ran respectably in this year's deep field, capping off what one cannot deny was quite the succesful season. Our team is full of young talent, and I can only hope Bates will be gunning toward the top of the region next year.

Bates Men Amped for Regionals After Strong NESCAC/ECAC Performances

I apologize for failing to update the website this past week. While I would like to contend that I've been swamped with work, I will concede that I've frittered away much of my time watching Battlestar Galactica. The past two meets have gone far too well to go without mention, with fifth place finishes at both NESCACs and ECACs, and a move into 31st in the national rankings. Our finish at NESCACs poises us well for regionals, as we were only 20 points out of second, and ran without Iceman up front. read more...

Bates Nipped by Bowdoin at States

The Bates men put up a real fight today at the state meet, in which they fell to Bowdoin, 23-36. The meet truly was a duel between Bates and Bowdoin, as USM, the third place teem, had 80 some points, and the top 9 finishers were from Bates and Bowdoin. The front of the race was indicative of things to come, as Noah was outkicked by Bowdoin's Coby Horowitz, both finishing in 25:43, beginning what could be an intense rivalry for years to come. Props especially to Jag, Graham, Elmo, and Jamie, all of whom had killer races. read more...

Bates 15th at Open New Englands

The Bates men ran to 15th place out of 47 teams at this weekend's Open New England Championships. Bates was the fourth division III team, behind only Williams, Bowdoin, and Keene State. The JV squad also faired quite well, placing 13th. Devin had a beastly race, placing 26th in a time of 25:20. Noah placed 44th in 25:36, Wortham was 88th at 26:05, and Tully was 126th in 26:22. Jag and Sweetums crossed the line within a second of each other, placing 150th and 151st in 26:36 and 26:37, with Grizz not far off in 26:43. read more...

Bates Second at Codfish Invitational

On a sweltering day at Franklin Park, the Bates men managed to finish second out of 25 teams in this weekend's Codfish Invitational, falling only to Division-II Bentley. While many were hampered by the heat, Noah, Devin, and Wortham managed to fight through it and finish second, seventh, and eleventh, respectively. Noah was in fact the first collegiate competitor to cross the line.read more...

Bates Takes First in Home Meet

The Bates men had a great day in their home meet at Pineland this weekend, defeating Bowdoin, Tufts, and Colby to win the meet. Bates was powered by a 1-2-3 finish, with Noah capturing the individual title in a time of 26:09, followed by Devin in 26:20 and Wortham in 26:21. Noah's time was the fastest run by a Bates athlete on the course to date. Bowdoin and Tufts put solid packs in behind Wortham, after which Tully, in his first race of the season coming off of injury, finished fourth for the team in a time of 27:10, with Sweetums nipping at his heels in 27:11. read more...

Bates Opens Up Season With Solid Victory

The team opened the 2010 cross country season at Pineland Farms, running against Colby on a 6k course in freshman/sophomore and junior/senior waves. Bates prevailed in both races, taking a combined 70 points over Colby's 39, using a goofy scoring system similar to that used in track. The day started off with the junior/senior race, in which Colby's Ben Cunkelman took the race from the gun, only to be chased down by Devin, who won with a four second margin of victory and a time of 19:38. Cunkelman took second, but Bates took the three through five spots thanks to Sweetums (Peter Gurney), Sean Colligan, and Taska, who all finished within 20 seconds of each other. Tristan and Kevin both had solid races as well, finishing eighth and ninth. read more...

Alumni Meet

Varsity Falls to Alumni despite strong performance

While falling to the alumni by one point, this year's varsity squad showed real potential in the alumni meet.  The alumni took the top three places, which, owing to the dual meet format, secured their victory.  Justin Freeman of the class of 98 won the race, notching his fifth alumni meet win, and third in the past four years.   Close behind Freeman was Robbie Gomez '05, followed by Steve Monsulick '07, who won last year's race.  Senior Devin Dilts almost turned the tables for the varsity team, but finished just a couple seconds behind Monsulick.  Still, the current Bates men managed to show their strength by sweeping places four through fourteen. read more...

Runners Anticipate Fall; Wortham runs with girls

As August approaches, and anticipation of the cross country season mounts, it has come time to archive last year's news here, and start a clean slate for what will hopefully be another year of success and surprises. It also seems appropriate to update the world on how those of us on the team have been keeping busy these past couple months. While training for the fall has been a feature of all of our schedules, some have been going about it differently than others. Wortham, for one, seems to have taken to running with girls. Though perhaps just for pleasure, this new approach to training has yielded surprisingly strong results, as he recently ran a pretty solid 5 miler. Nonetheless, photo documentation of this tomfoolery will have to be obtained so Todd can give Wortham a scolding upon his return to campus.

Tristan has become somewhat of a naturalist, spotting all sorts of crazy animals on his runs, including moose on a couple of occaisions. Also busy communing with nature, Taska decided to escape the raging metropolis of Lowell, Vermont, and hiked the long trail a few weeks ago, covering it in just two weeks. Others, who I will refrain from naming, have not been so inclined, and have instead occupied much of their time with silly xbox games. Still, they claim to have been balancing their technoboobery with other fruitful pursuits. The incoming freshmen, in particular, have been reporting a number of interesting activities, such as surfing, triathloning, and travelling to locations including DC, Italy, and even South Africa for the world cup. They all sound like wholesome young gentlemen, who should bring a lot to the table this fall. Until then, however, we've all got to suffer
through the heat, or hope it subsides, as there are many more miles to run before September.
