A New Academic Building for Bates

Construction is moving forward on the new academic building, which will provide classroom, laboratory, and faculty office space for seven social-science departments and four interdisciplinary programs. The new building is a landmark campus structure occupying a prominent location overlooking Lake Andrews, located between Lane Hall (above, on left) and Smith Hall, in space occupied by the former maintenance building. Ground was broken for the building in April 1997, and construction began after the demolition of the maintenance center. As of October 1998, the structure's exterior has been nearly completed, and interior finish work will continue through the rest of the academic year. Subject to available funding and construction conditions, the new academic building is scheduled for completion in 1999.
