Ground Floor On the ground floor, the
fan-shaped "kaleidoscope" classroom will look out over Lake Andrews. Belying its
appearance as a traditional lecture hall, the 125-seat room will allow flexible seating
arrangements that create, when needed, intimate learning spaces within a larger area.
Seminar rooms, classrooms, and computer workrooms will also be found on the ground floor,
plus faculty offices and lab space for anthropology.
First Floor
On the first floor, the vestibule and lobby lead to the building's signature space: the
three-story atrium. Like the kaleidoscope classroom below it, the atrium overlooks Lake
Andrews. Together with the open staircase behind, the atrium looks upward and outward at
the rest of the building, creating a "town green" for social events, academic
gatherings, exhibitions, or quiet reflection in a space abounding with plants and natural
light.
Second Floor
The departmental lounges are the important gathering spots for faculty and their
students. These are the "hubs" from which other building featues radiate, like
faculty offices, seminar rooms, larger classrooms, and lab space. On the second floor,
academic departments will likely include African American studies, history, classical and
medieval studies, American cultural studies, and women's studies.
Third Floor
From the third floor, one will be able to view the atrium below and feel connected to
the rest of the building. The psychology department will be here, with lab rooms and
seminar space complementing faculty offices. Sharing the other wing will be the academic
departments of sociology and education. The third floor will also include a computer
workroom.
