- GENERAL INFORMATION:
- Exams are scheduled on Fridays, but exceptions can be arranged
in advance if needed. See the syllabus for exact dates.
Exams will be made available early in the day (7am or earlier)
and will be due before day's end to accommodate to various student schedules.
Students with job-related conflicts, health emergencies, or other special needs should email me a week in advance, or as soon as possible.
Exams are non-cumulative, and will not cover material already covered in previous exams.
- EXAM FORMAT:
Questions will be of the following types:
- Questions requiring a single word or two-word term as an answer, such as a sentence completion
("fill in the blank").
- Definitions (in your own words) among a wide choice of terms.
- "Free format" questions requiring longer explanations to be written in your
own words.
Free-format questions offer MANY CHOICES, such as answering two questions from a much longer list;
please read the instructions carefully and take the time to choose wisely.
Samples of free-format questions
from previous exams can be viewed here
and here; some of these questions may reappear this year.
- EXAM PROCEDURES:
- IMPORTANT: All exams are entirely closed-book, without notes or other aids.
Students should follow
the
WSU Policy on Academic Honesty throughout any exam.
- Part 1 (ONLINE): One-word (some two-word) answers, and also a choice of terms to define--
These online questions require the Respondus LockDown
Browser, which you must download in advance
(CLICK HERE for instructions).
Once you begin Part 1, you must complete it in a single sitting.
- Part 2: Free-format ("essay"-type) questions, including a range of choices--
Answers to these questions must be submitted using email
(DO NOT USE GOOGLE DOCS or any similar cloud-based service).
- You may do either Part 1 or Part 2 first, but both should be completed by the exam deadline. (See Class NOTICES for deadline info.)
- Class policy on late exams is explained HERE.
- I do not take off for spelling, as long as the word sounds right when pronounced.
- WHAT TO STUDY:
- LECTURE NOTES, INCLUDING THE OUTLINES (AND ILLUSTRATIONS) POSTED ONLINE.
The chapter outlines posted (here) online
can be used as a STUDY GUIDE.
- ASSIGNED READINGS IN THE TEXT, with special attention to:
the chapter summary at the end of each chapter;
all illustrations (including their labels and their captions),
and any other illustrations shown in class;
the vocabulary words that are printed in boldface in the text and at the end of each chapter;
make sure that you understand these terms and be prepared to define them.
- In general, my exams tend to emphasize material covered in class more than material in the book.
Of course, anything covered in both places is doubly important!
- If you have any questions about whether a topic will or will not be covered, please
feel free to email me.
- Students who need special accommodations for the exam will receive special instructions via email.
Please make sure that I am aware of your needs, and email me in advance of the exam if you don't hear from me first.
- If you miss an exam for any reason, it is your responsibility to email me and arrange for a make-up.
