EXAM PROCEDURES:

1. HOW TO INSTALL the required software

  1. First, go to this address and download the Respondus Lockdown Browser:
    https://download.respondus.com/lockdown/download.php?id=739535338
  2. Then install the software on your computer by going to Downloads
(or "This PC" and then "Downloads")   and then clicking on the
LockDownBrowser----.exe file to install it, or follow one of these: (NOTE:  You only need to do steps 1-2 once.)
  3. When you are ready to take the exam,
you must first close all other computer applications that may be running.
  4. Open up the Respondus LockDown Browser. If it does not automatically bring you to Blackboard, you may then need to go to Blackboard directly.
  5. Once in Blackboard, click on "Courses" and then on "BI 101".   Then look for the exam itself.
IMPORTANT NOTE:  If you try this with your regular browser (like Firefox, Chrome, or Safari), it will ask for a password and none will work.   Please see the next item.
  6. NO PASSWORD is required. If you are asked for a password, you have done something wrong:
    • Make sure you close all other programs and applications.
    • Make sure you are using the Respondus Lockdown Browser only, and not your usual browser.
  7. Special notice to users of Chromebook computers:   Lockdown Browser has not always worked with Chromebook computers, so you need to do more, and do it soon:   please go to https://support.respondus.com/support/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Article/View/586/0/can-a-chromebook-be-used-with-lockdown-browser-and-respondus-monitor-higher-ed. for additional instructions, or else make some provision to use a different computer for exams.
  8. I have provided a simple Sample test (just two easy questions) to familiarize you with the test-taking procedures.
TO TAKE THIS SAMPLE TEST, using the LockDown Browser: Go to Blackboard and click on "Courses" and then on "BI 101".   Then, click on "Sample Test for Practice" and answer the two simple questions in order to test the necessary software.
I STRONGLY URGE EVERY STUDENT to follow the above procedure and take the sample test in order to make sure that you are prepared to take the real exam.
  9. Please email me if you have any problems. I will reply as soon as I can.

2. TAKING THE EXAM
  1. The exam will consist of two parts.
Part 1 will be a 1½ hour timed computer-driven test using Blackboard and Respondus, consisting of a series of fill-ins or short (usually one-word) answers, plus a choice of terms for you to define.   YOU WILL NEED TO SET THIS UP IN ADVANCE,   as specified above.
  2. On the day of the test, click on the test to begin Part 1. You will only be able to take Part 1 of the test once, and you will have a 90-minute time limit (very generous) for this part.
  3. Part 2 will be a choice of free-format, long-answer questions, with a wide range of choices.
Questions (or a link to the questions) will be emailed to students by 7:00 a.m. on the morning of the test.   Answers to Part 2 should be submitted to me by email.
DO NOT USE GOOGLE DOCS or any cloud-based service to submit exam results;  just use regular email.
  4. Part 1 (the fill-ins) must be completed within 90 min. after you start them.
  5. You may choose to do either Part 1 or Part 2 first, but both must be submitted by the deadline.
  6. No questions will be included from material already covered on previous exams.
  7. The entire exam should be completed and submitted by the deadline specified in Class Notices.   A penalty may be assessed for exams that miss this deadline.

  • STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES should contact me by email if they feel that special accommodations are needed. Accommodations for students with disabilties are arranged on a
case-by-case basis in cooperation with the Office of Student Accessibility Services.
  • STUDENTS FACING EMERGENCIES should contact me by email as soon as possible.
