URINARY SYSTEM AND EXCRETION
  • Kindeys             Kidneys*
          Retroperitoneal position     Tubule anatomy
          Juxtaglomerular cells (sense BP, secrete renin)
          Podocytes; filtration (<3nm vs >5nm)
          Control of kidney
          Resorption
          Counter-current multiplier; role of ADH
  • Urinary ducts and bladder
  • LAB:   urinary system
  • Keeping body fluids in balance
        Water is usually best
              Special cases: vomiting, diarrhea (very old or babies);
              endurance athletes

        Acid-base (pH) balance:     CO2 + H2O   ⇌   H+ + HCO3-
              (phosphate and protein buffers, too)
        Hormones (esp. aldosterone) --> Na+ retention --> bloating
  • Development of excretion and urinary organs
         Pronephros, Mesonephros, Metanephros
  • Disorders of the excretory system
