Mills offers a meta-commentary on strategies of representation: His data visualizations present highly abstracted (notional, ideational) information, yet the most urgent aspect of his aesthetic strategy is the physical and material: Instead of the flat, formal, hyper-abstract grammar common to design aesthetics, Mills provides painterly (handmade, drawn, stenciled, collaged) marks.
