The catalyst for each work or series in Motive is a work of art by an earlier contemporary artist. For each, the “motive-work” was particularly important to me during my formative years. Beginning in 2013, I decided to reconsider the works and my ideas about them, then make a work or series in response. For some, the resulting work is closely related to the motive-work visually. Others are more exploratory, taking conceptual cues from the motive-work, and sometimes veering off in unexpected directions.
