Sprawl outline

  1. Suburbs# have been with us for a long time, and changing all the while.
  2. Now they sprawl out of control, and full of problems.
  3. Many of the criticisms of sprawl presume a classic notion of closed places.
  4. Yet it may seem that the traditional city has come to an end.
  5. Cities are losing their economic centrality, so what are cities for?
  6. If we refuse the idea that sprawl automatically denies urban and civic virtues, we still must make sprawl more livable and just. We need to think about ways to bring the virtues of urban density to the sprawl.
  7. For already built suburbs, this means seeking ways to increase linkage and self-awareness.
  8. For new construction, ideas from the New Urbanism can help, when located in their larger context.
