temporary places

There is a social grammar involved when we establish temporary places, as might happen when we set up a picnic blanket or rearrange chairs in a cocktail lounge. By a few gestures we establish zones of action, borders, some dimensions of approach and avoidance. Such places may be temporary, but here is where we sit, and if you move that chair too far you are violating a (temporary) expectation and so making a statement about your role in the conversation.
