Thomas Gravell's Use of the Dylux® Method

The Dylux® method of making contact prints of watermarks was developed by Thomas Gravell and used in the publications listed below.

In these works, the contact prints were reproduced for publication photographically, using a red filter to heighten the contrast between the light and dark tones (yellow and blue) in the Dylux® contact print. In this electronic archive, the same effect was accomplished by scanning the contact prints in color and saving the red channel. Gravell collaborated with photographer Herbert L. Crossan III, photographer at the Winterthur Museum, Winterthur, Delaware, to produce these volumes.
