Bates College Women's Cross
Country

Smith Invitational, Sept. 13, 1997 - The women's cross country took four of the top seven spots at Smith to win the 5K Smith Triangular. Junior All-American Adelia Myrick (Kodiak, Alaska) and senior co-captain Abby Phelps (Chester, N.H.) took third and fourth place to pace the Bobcats, while senior co-captain Kim Walker (Hampton, N.H.) and first-year runner Kristine Oelberger (Stow, Mass.) came in sixth and seventh.

Halfway through the race victory was not yet apparent. In the second half of the race, Bates started to challenge. Adelia and Abby had established their positions among the top five finishers early, but there were still points to be had as Kim Walker, Kristine Oelberger and Lauren Nally worked together making their way through the crowd solidifying their positions among the top twelve runners.

In the final half mile of the race Jess Young '99 who was running in her first ever cross country race aggressively attacked the largest hill on the course passing four runners on the way up and three more on the way down. She caught teammate Lauren Nally who was running strong with 400m to go in the race. They finished finished fifth and sixth for the team, Jess in 10th place and Lauren in 12th.

Kristine Oelberger '01 challenged two Tufts runners in the final 200m of the race. She closed a 30 meter gap, sprinted by them and was able to hold off their persistant challenges to finish the race seventh behind Kim Walker. Erika Cohen '98 had a strong race finishing seventh for the team with teammates Tracy Lyford '00 and Ellen Humphrey '01 finishing within a second of Erika. All three in the top 20 in the 45 person race.

Improvement was apparent for many of the runners who had raced on the same course last Fall, but most significant were the performaces of the co-captains. Abby Phelps showed a 14 second improvement while Kim Walker improved her time by 30 seconds.
