MIT, WILLIAMS TIE FOR NEW ENGLAND
LEWISTON, Maine -- For the first time in meet history, there are co-champions at the New England Division III Men's Track and Field Championships. Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Williams College, champions in 2000 and 2001, respectively, each earned 150.5 points to share the title. Wheaton College finished third with 81 points to match its highest performance ever.
The top three teams combined to win 13 of the meet's 20 events. MIT opened a 39-point lead by taking the top seven spots in Friday night's pentathlon, including winner Rick Rajter with a score of 3,320. The Engineers were also extremely successful in the middle-distance events, as Yuval Mazor won the 600-meters in 1:23.76, Sean Montgomery took the 800 with a time of 1:53.76 and Brian Anderson took the 1,000 in 2:29.59.
Williams made up some of the difference in the shot put, where they took the top three slots, paced by Trey Wright with a heave of 52 feet, 5.25 inches. The Ephs also won the meet's longest and shortest races as Jamiyl Peters took the 55-meter dash in 6.50 seconds and Wes Reutimann won the 5,000-meter run in 15:00.68.
There were no multiple winners on the afternoon and only one performer successfully defended his New England crown, Jaime Sawler of host Bates, who won the 35-pound weight throw with a toss of 59 feet, 8.5 inches, a season-best. Two other Maine teams won events: Bowdoin's Patrick Vardaro in the 3,000-meter run (8:33.49) and Colby's distance medley relay team (10:28.37).
