SAWLER DEFENDS NEW ENGLAND CROWN IN WEIGHT THROW
Five individuals, two relays named All-New England

LEWISTON, Maine — The Bates College men's track and field team finished in eighth place for the second year in a row at the New England Division III championships, held this year on the Slovenski track in Merrill Gymnasium. The Bobcats scored 32 points, up two from 2001.

Once again, the team's top performer was senior Jaime Sawler (Stratham, N.H.), who successfully defended his crown in the 35-pound weight with a throw of 59 feet, 8.5 inches, more than three feet further than his nearest competitor. Five other individuals and two relay teams also took home All-New England honors in addition to Sawler. Three runners scored for the Bobcats in middle distances: first-year Andrius Stasiunas (Panevyzas, Lithuania) finished fourth in the 800-meter run (1:57.47), junior Malcolm Gray (Bronxville, N.Y.) was fifth in the 1,000 meters (2:32.80) and first-year Michael Downing (Gorham, Maine) came in eighth in the 1,500 (4:01.86).

Senior Greg Hurley (Arlington, Mass.) joined Sawler as an All-New England winner in the weight throw with a heave of 54-3.5, while junior Brian Luoma (Virginia Beach, Va.) placed eighth in the triple jump (42-8.5). The Bobcat distance medley relay team of Gray, Stasiunas, Downing and first-year Charlie Poris (Montclair, N.J.) placed fourth, while the 4x800 relay team of junior Eric Knackmuhs (Wyckoff, N.J.), sophomores Tim Miller (Baldswinville, N.Y.) and Brent Mann (Boxford, Mass.) and rookie Nick Hansen (Harvard, Mass.) placed eighth.
