UNE DOWNS BATES, 83-75

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- After taking their first lead of the second half with 3:59 left in the game, the Bates College Bobcats (1-1) were unable to convert another field goal until just before the buzzer, falling to the University of New England Nor'Easters (1-3), 83-75.

Trailing by two at the half, 43-41, the Bobcats stayed within six for much of the second. Down 66-59 with just over eight minutes remaining, the Bobcats went on a 12-2 run over the next four minutes. Eight of the Bobcats points came from first-year guard Billy Hart (Haverhill, Mass.), who connected on a pair of three-pointers and two free throws, while sophomore Rommel Padonou (Libreville, Gabon) had two buckets, including a follow of a Hart miss. The duo each hit a free throw down the stretch, but UNE senior Mike McCarthy scored 11 of his team-high 19 in the final 3:18 to give the Nor'easters the win.

Hart led all scorers with 26 points, including five of seven from three point range. First-year forwards Alex Wilson (Duxbury, Mass.) and Ed Walker (Roxbury, Mass.) each had nine rebounds, while Walker and first-year guard Matt Moulis (Concord, N.H.) each had six assists to lead the Bobcats.
