BATES MEN COME FROM BEHIND AGAIN, 57-51, OVER UMF

FARMINGTON, Maine Ñ The Bates College men's basketball team overcame a halftime deficit for the second game in a row today, defeating the University of Maine-Farmington Beavers, 57-51, on the road.

Bates (6-3) trailed by 11 points at the half and by 15 after UMF scored the first two buckets of the second half to take a 35-20 lead. The Beavers would score only three more field goals the rest of the way, however, as the Bobcats outscored them 37-15 over the final 17:33. Bates scored 21 of the next 24 points, reclaiming their first lead since 15-13 on an offensive rebound by Alex Wilson (Duxbury, Mass.), who completed the three-point play to give Bates a 41-40 lead with 7:11 left. UMF hit two free throws to take the lead, but rookie Brian Gerrity (Manchester, Maine) hit a 3-pointer to give Bates a 44-42 lead

UMF (3-5) scored the next five points, going up 47-44 on a 3-pointer by Bob Deetjen with 4:58 left to play, the Beavers' final field goal before a buzzer beater after the game was decided. Junior Angelo Salvaggio (Portland, Maine) answered moments later and Wilson's free throws at 3:58 gave Bates the lead for good at 49-47. Wilson hit Bates' next four points as well as the Bobcats took the victory.

Wilson and fellow tricaptain Ed Walker (Roxbury, Mass.) led the Bobcats with 11 points each. Walker also topped the team with six rebounds. Deetjen led UMF with 19 points, the only Beaver in double figures.
