Bates has had four players earn Regional All-America honors over the past two years, including forwards Johie Farrar '03 (West Paris, Maine) and Julia Price '03 (Mansfield, Mass.) and midfielder Kathrene Tiffany '03 (Boston, Mass.). Head coach Wynn Hohlt's team will most miss the presence of departed goalkeeper Peg Ficks '01 (Washington, Conn.), a senior captain in 2000 and a two-time All-American in the cage. Ficks was not only the first Bates woman to earn multiple All-America honors for field hockey, but she also earned Academic All-America honors as a senior. Farrar and Price look to move the focus of Bates' success from the defensive end of the field to the offense. In 1999, the tandem, along with senior Ginny Hurley '02 (Revere, Mass.), helped Bates produce its most prolific scoring season since the early 1980s. Farrar and Hurley combined for 18 goals that year, each the highest-scoring single season for the Bobcats in the previous 10 years. In 2000, Price was one of the top playmakers in the NESCAC, recording six assists. Tiffany anchored the Bates midfield, gaining a reputation as one of the toughest players in the region. She also was second on the team with four assists, two of which snapped the 34-game home winning streak of nationally-ranked Keene State College, while her lone goal helped the Bobcats to a key NESCAC road victory.
