Tap out a note to magazine@bates.edu Joe and Vera Jensen Bond continue to enjoy living in Houston and are especially pleased to have their family, including three grandchildren, nearby. Vera is director of both Early Childhood and Lower School divisions of the Holy Spirit Episcopal School where she's been for 24 years. Joe is the international controller for his company and travels primarily to South America.... After a trip to Idaho to spend Christmas with her son and grandson, Priscilla Hjelm Sylvia returned to Martha's Vineyard where she entertained some classmates for New Year's Eve. Included in the group were Beverly Graffam Ketchum, Arthur '60 and Sara Kinsel Hayes, and Jerry and Gretchen Shorter Davis.... Paul and Freda Shepherd Maier are busy with 10 grandchildren and had a wonderful trip to Hawaii last year.... Joel '62 and Rachel Smith Young hosted a mini-Bates reunion last summer.

Tap out a note to magazine@bates.edu Susan Armstrong Cox continues to sing in a Cape Cod musical group that performs sporadically. She is still at Paine Webber amid the frantic pace of the market.... Rebecca Bishop Meyers is running the "core facility" for the biosciences at Brandeis, doing DNA and protein synthesis and sequencing, as well as mass spectrometry of biomolecules. Daughter Jessica, Brown '92, has been in San Francisco pursuing a career in singing and acting. Daughter Rachel, Northeastern '95, is in Amherst doing head hunting over the Internet. Becky and her partner, Carol, are going to Amsterdam this summer for the fifth Gay Games.... Ann Bowman Scholl sold her natural whole-grain breads bakery. She purchased an orchard home and is busy fixing it up.... Janice Carroll Moreshead sold her house and moved to an apartment in historic Hallowell on the Kennebec River. She recently received an appointment to the board of trustees of Fort Western, famed for its connection with Benedict Arnold.... Tony Cherot has an engineering consulting business and started an Internet streaming media business that is just beginning to grow. His daughter will be admitted to candidacy for a Ph.D. in sociology this spring and his son has started an audio/video resale business. Tony is mentoring an eighth grader.... Marian Drew Leibfried writes that Ray '60 has retired and they plan to travel extensively.... James Evans is the co-author of an article in The Journal of General Virology, based on his most recent research sabbatical at the Univ. of Birmingham. He also co-authored (with Richard H. Eckhouse, UMass-Boston) the book, Alpha RISC Architecture for Programmers (Prentice Hall, 1999).... Classmates are sorry to learn of the death of John Follett's wife, Patricia, who died on Jan. 31. We send our heartfelt thoughts to John, his four daughters, sons-in-law, and three grandchildren.... Sharon Fowler Kenrick's husband, Ed, will merge his business with another chiropracter, while Sharon and the other doctor's wife handle the paperwork.... Bob Gibbons plans to retire from teaching science at Hudson (Mass.) High School next June after 37 years in the classroom.... Sylvia Harlow Moreau moved in 1970 to Christchurch, N.Z., where husband Bill has had a teaching position at the Univ. of Canterbury physics department. Sylvia has been teaching primary school (12- and 13-year-olds) with responibilities for science and the school library. Daughter Jennifer lives in Spain as a professional violinist, and daughter Carolyn works in Hartford, Conn., as a journalist.... Rachel Harper Garcelon enjoys her job as the assistant and household manager for a 90-year-old woman who lives in Yarmouth in a 160-year-old ship captain's home, where she was born. Rae's partner Allan teaches real-estate licensing courses for Coldwell Banker Harnden Beecher in Portland, and this winter he taught a real-estate course at the Univ. of Southern Maine.... Van and Janet Miller Judd live in Ballston Lake, N.Y. Van is still principal librarian at the New York State Library in Albany. Janet is a school librarian, dividing her time between the middle and senior high schools in the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake School system. They celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary last summer by going Heli-hiking in the Canadian Rockies. Van also serves a a critical care EMT in a local volunteer ambulance squad.... Cindy Kalber Nordstrom has a home-based business teaching music. Four of her students study violin, and most study piano.... Emily Leadbetter Althausen's husband, Alex, has a urologic practice at Mass. General Hospital. Emily does architectural guiding around Boston out of the Museum of Fine Arts and is very involved with the Lincoln Library as one of five trustees. Peter (28) graduated from Tufts Medical School in May and Anne (29) has one more year of ob-gyn residency at Hartford Hospital.... Katherine Marshall Stricker sold her 22-year-old home in Herendon, Va. She took a fall 1998 vacation to the Canadian Rockies to fulfill a longtime dream of seeing Lake Louise, and also attended a 40th high school reunion.... Lorrie Otto Gloede enjoys ballroom dancing and danced in two student-teacher showcases this past year.... Leah Rainville Foster and Tom moved from New York City to their Tahoe home. Tom has his own insurance adjusting business, and she found a Xerox posting covering Sacramento, Reno, and Carson City. A vacation home in Sea Pines, Hilton Head, provides a gathering place for the grandchildren.... Peter Schuyler's engineering company expanded this past year. He and Sonia went to Russia and Norway last summer, staying in Murmansk, way above the Arctic Circle with the family of an exchange student who was with them two years ago. They brought the Russian student back and are sponsoring her, making it possible for her to attend the Univ. of Vermont.... Robert Scofield shared a Caribbean cruise with his family over New Year's 1998. The highlight of their year was a trip to England in June, visiting London with day trips to Greenwich and Windsor. They also drove to Stratford-upon-Avon, hiked around the Cotswold region, and visited Bath, Stonehenge, and the naval port of Portsmouth. Wife Jane took a full schedule of summer classes through Colorado School of Mines and began her sixth year as a college counselor at a primarily minority high school last fall.... James Swartchild and Peggy went on a safari to Tanzania and Kenya. Daughter Jill (28) was married in the summer.... Lyn Webber Nelson and Gus took a long-awaited trip to England, Scotland, and Wales. Gus loves retirement; Lyn is still happy with her therapy practice. Lyn's mother, Happy Walker Webber '36, died on March 6. We all send Lyn our deepest sympathy..... Carol Williams Jackson's daughter and her husband moved to Sydney, Australia, in July, where he got a job with the organizing committee for the Olympic Games. Carol and Dan visited them this winter, renting a sailboat in the Whitsunday Islands by the Great Barrier Reef.... Nike Zamanis King still works in the Alameda public library part time and also has a full-time job in a large law firm in San Francisco as the "goodwill ambassador," receptionist, and human-resource mainstay.

Tap out a note to magazine@bates.edu Doug Arnold still works with summer seminars and institutes for teachers at The National Endowment for the Humanities, and Margo still supervises three publications staff members at McGraw Hill Lifetime Learning Co. Margo Arnold Inc.'s major client is the Connecticut state historian's office, where they are working on the state's public records for 1814-1815. Doug does the research and editing, while Margo does the layout.... Richard Brogadir wrote an article for the Connecticut State Dental Assn.'s Communicator (October 1998) about an "incredible experience" in Burkina Faso, West Africa, where son Seth is a Peace Corps volunteer. Accompanied by wife Tina, son Josh, and daughter Jill, Dick took along 500 toothbrushes donated by Oral B and 500 tubes of Colgate toothpaste for the people there. He talked about brushing and oral hygiene and showed them how to make a toothbrush - which most never had used - by chewing on the end of a stick for a brush. Seth translated his dad's English into French. The Brogadirs were royally entertained in African fashion and showered with gifts.
