The principal of Kingfield Elementary School, Mark Hurvitt, ran in the 100th Boston Marathon last April. "The only thing I can really compare it to was in 1982, when I went to see The Who play at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia. With all the people crowded around you it was like being at a rock concert for four hours," he said.

Next Reunion in 1998. First some old news, some of which is from
last year. Jane Biggs Sanger writes from Delaware where she is a project
manager working on both state and federal Superfund sites, and a mother of two
daughters.... In Swampscott, Mass., Christine Cannon Fredericks keeps
busy with her gardens when she has time from her job at Fidelity. She hires
permanent technical people and is always looking for new talent -- if anyone is
interested. Last spring, Chris Cluff received his D.V.M. and is working
for Riti Immunochem in Hamilton, Mont.... From Rio de Janeiro, Maria de
Mello e Souza writes of the birth of her second daughter. Maria teaches and
is working on an international research project on reproductive rights....
Adrieanne Emery Johnson built a home in North Waterboro last year where
she lives with husband Dan and children Luke and Alexandra.... Meg Emley
earned a second degree in nursing from Columbia and has worked with cancer and
AIDS patients. She recently spent time in Kenya at a mission clinic.... Last
year Andrea Gelfuso Goetz spent two months in Australia while husband
Andy took a sabbatical in Melbourne. They did a bit of traveling through the
country, visited Bali and the Great Barrier Reef.... In Franconia, N.H.,
Alice Hamblin Williams recently gave birth to Jack Henry. They also have
a daughter, Lucy.... A new job and a new daughter for Scott Hazelton and
wife Susan. He is an economic consultant with the WEFA Group in Burlington,
Mass. His daughter was born in May 1995.... Olympic envoy Laura Howard
DePree worked with the athletes in the Olympic Village in Atlanta. Laura
also announces the birth of her second daughter in February 1995....
Shannon Kenneally Coray has settled into Oak Harbor in Washington where
she has a job in advertising sales. She and John live about two hours north of
Seattle and love the beautiful views of mountains and bald eagles.... Doria
Kutrubes has accepted a partnership offer from Hager Geo Science Inc. in
Waltham, Mass. She will perform environmental and geotechnical surveys using
geophysical methods.... In Philadelphia, George Liacopulos is still
serving as a priest at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral. He and his wife
were expecting their first baby last summer. In another part of Pennsylvania
(Phoenixville), Dave Liegeot and family bought a house. Dave is vice
president of sales and product development for the SSK-Reda Division of the
Reda Sports Group. Wife Anne works for Astra/Merck.... Jennifer Locke
Berkenstock is working part time as an attorney in Middletown, Conn., and
working full time raising her two daughters.... Last year David Merritt
took a new job as a project manager implementing a statewide automated
child welfare information system for the State of Maine.... In May 1995,
Janet Morford finished her Ph.D. in anthropology at the Univ. of
Chicago. She and husband Jose and son Gabriel moved to the Philadelphia area
where Janet is teaching French civilization at Bryn Mawr. Janet has run into
Dave Wolf and Kim Gilman '84.... Some sad news from John
Morefield and wife Catherine. Their daughter, Sarah, passed away in
December 1994 after a two-year struggle with a rare heart disease. They have
since had a second daughter who, John reports, is happy and healthy.... In
Tucson, Ariz., Laura Murray Montenegro is working on her master's in
multicultural/bilingual education and is teaching high-school Spanish. Laura
would love to hear from Joey, Leonard, and Lance.... Colleen
O'Connell Jiminez is continuing her hotel career as controller of the
Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. She is missing the East Coast and would welcome
contact from any Batesies in California.... "Oz" is what Michael Ouellet
calls his current home of Sidney, Australia. He is on assignment setting up a
credit department for his trade banking branch of State Street Bank.... John
Petrosky, his wife, and two daughters built and moved into their new home
two years ago. John recently completed his master's in computer science....
Stephanie Poster is working as in-house counsel for what must now be
Fleet Bank (it was Shawmut last spring).... On the political front, Kevin
Raye is chief of staff for Senator Olympia Snowe of Maine after she was
elected to the Senate. Kevin and wife Karen have moved to D.C. where they are
enjoying themselves.... Further south, in Saint Andrews, Tenn., Erin
Russell and husband Tim Hillman '80 make up the theater
department at Saint Andrews-Sewanee School. They have three sons and summer at
Watchaug Pond in Charlestown, R.I.... First-time mother Sharon Saltzgiver
Wright is at home raising Ben, born January 1995. She is doing free-lance
work for financial companies such as Fidelity and Putnam Co.... Lisa
Sofis thinks she has set the class record for living in one town the
longest: Watertown, Mass., since 1983. She is a healthcare consultant for a
firm that consults to state and local governments around the country. She was
married in June 1994 to John Scheft.... In Lewiston, Patricia Strohla
is working as the critical-care nurse educator at Central Maine Medical Center
and was to be married in October 1995.... Tony Trombly says he walked
into a demo recently where the customer was Professor Forrest McClure. Tony is
selling Sharp LCD products in the D.C. area.... In West Hartford, Conn.,
Lisa Vielleux Piker is a bond analyst with CIGNA and was expecting her
first child in August 1995. Ken Worthy recently spent two years in Bali
studying Balinese music and traveling around Southeast Asia.

"Life is treating me very well," writes Jeanne Argento, who is a deputy regional counselor at the Bureau of Work Site Clean-up at the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection. She also teaches a course in environmental law at Suffolk Univ.... In California, busy at-home mom Leslie Ault Manning has "never a dull moment" with baby Isabelle and Sarah (2 1/2). Last summer they traveled back east from Oakland to see family and fellow Batesies, and also vacationed in Italy. Earlier in the summer they were in Hawaii for two weeks awaiting husband Paul's completion of the Pacific Cup sailboat race from the West Coast to Hawaii.... With husband Cole '82, who produces videos, Shannon Banks Tamminen is establishing a new business, Maine Family Films, a mentoring program, through Maine's Business Development Corp. Their intent is to produce an alternative to commercial television -- high-quality video tapes that respect the intelligence of the child and are fun, gently educational, and non-violent -- and programs parents can enjoy watching with their children.... From Enfield, Conn., Clarissa Hunter Basch enjoys her married life and her job at Hampshire College, and being an aunt to her brother's two girls "is great."... Heather Beebe is a health-care consultant in a Canadian institution. She says in spite of the different systems, Canada has problems similar to those of the Unites States in cost-efficient care (or lack thereof). Thanks to her French major, assimilation into Quebec culture has been easier. She and husband Luc Jarry are building a house -- "anyone decent with a hammer is welcome to join in the fun."... Last December Leanne Belmont began a jew job with Fidelity Investments in institutional sales. She lives in Charlestown, Mass.... From Chicago we learn that Joan Buerk is a multinational account supervisor at J. Walter Thompson Advertising, while Mark Buckley serves as vice president and division head at FirStar Bank. They looked forward to seeing many Bates friends in the summer and hoped for an overseas posting this year.... In May Laurie Candelmo McCammon earned her M.S. degree in adult education (training and development concentration) from the Univ. of Southern Maine and was elected a Phi Kappa Phi scholar. Her first article was published in The Journal of Volunteer Administration, and she was presented at the International Conference on Volunteer Administration. Laurie is still with the Kennebec Council of Girl Scouts and also is executive director of the World Institute of Social Architecture.... Until she took maternity leave, Julie Carson was a manager at MCI Telecommunications in the consumer markets division in Washington, D.C. She keeps in touch with Stewart and Diane Wylie Hirtz and Andy and Jane Casey Criscitiello.... In Massachusetts, Bill Crowley works in Wakefield as vice president of Natgun Corp.. He lives in Concord with wife Liz, daughter Ali, and son Tommy.... Lisa D'Antonio Bryan finally returned to France last spring for a much-belated honeymoon.... Last March, Debby and Ed Dippold III had as much fun as did daughter Alaina at Disney World -- especially the Minnie-character breakfasts.... After two years in Chicago, Steve and Georgeanne Ebersold DiCenso have moved back to Glastonbury, Conn., with Peter who is doing "all the normal things a 1-year-old does."... Living in Marietta, Ga., Gregory Fisher is director of Bear Stevens, a job that involves regular travel to Scandinavia, Holland, the Caribbean, West Indies, and Netherlands Antilles. Wife Christi is lucky -- she goes along!... On an exchange as part of her Ph.D. degree work in French linguistics at Indiana Univ., Laurie Forsman has been teaching English at the Univ. of Pau in France. She looks forward to getting back to "real work. I have too much free time."... Tim '82, Emma, and Beth George Kane love living in the greater Portland area now that Tim is on the development staff at Bates. Beth passed the Maine bar exam in February and is now licensed to practice in New Hampshire and Maine. She has opened her own general practice in Portland's Old Port.... At MIT, James Goodberlet has a one-year post-doctoral position in Nano-Structures Lab. He runs with the Boston Running Club, looks forward to life after graduate school.... "It's a great life," says the Rev. Laura Hutchinson Whitmore, now mother of four (6 and under), with all the usual accompaniments of PTA, karate, tennis, ballet, gymboree lessons. She keeps her hand in the ministry with various church workshops on grief and children, Christian education programs, and Meyer-Briggs personality types.... Class secretary Iben Jensen Eld is president of Quota International, a service organization in Concord, Mass., that recently held an annual benefit concert. Still working in the employee benefits field, she and husband Ron visited Denmark in the summer and in July she attended the Quota International Convention in Nashville, Tenn.... Michael '83 and Caitlin McCarthy Kelly have been living in Greenwich, Conn., with eighth-grade son Caleb, and year-old Maggie. With Michael's promotion at Goldman Sachs they will move to San Francisco, but continue to spend summers sailing, swimming, and playing tennis at Christmas Cove, Maine.... Lise Lapointe-Murer's business is booming. She has added an employee to her contract physical therapy service. She and Louis are building their dream house in Williamsburg, Va.... In Davis, Calif., Patty Lemay Lufburrow is a senior chemist at Aergit, working for the company's quality assurance function and dealing with FDA compliance issues. She had been with Abbott Labs until the division at Nova Nordak was sold. Aergit, known for its propellant systems, is diversifying so Patty will keep busy until the next "challenge."... A hydrogeologist in the federal Superfund program for the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection, Mark Lewis serves on the DEP's wildfire crew. In the summer of 1994 he fought forest fires in Montana as he did in Minnesota last summer (1995). Mark, who lives in Stratford, Conn., ran in the Hartford Marathon, his first.... As of June Rich and Marcia Lowry Maloney became owners of a ranch home in a "great neighborhood" of Natick, Mass.... In Washington, D.C., John Luddy is a legislative assistant to Oklahoma senator Jim Inhofe, who is a member of the Armed Services Committee. John advises him on defense and foreign policy issues. The pace is hectic, but he loves being "where the action is." In the past year he has been to Germany, Taiwan and Bosnia, as well as Oklahoma. John ran in the Boston Marathon, his 11th, and recently bumped into J.P. Cullen, who was out running.... Walter McNeil Jr. has been elected to the post of Union County freeholder, representing over 500,000 people in the Plainfield, N.J., area. In his induction speech, he promised to work on the high unemployment and low job rates of the county. In February he had a personal meeting with President Clinton to talk about election strategy and where he wants to take the country in the future. "During the meeting," Walter says, "I realized why I am so proud to be a Democrat.... The [first year] has been wonderful to me and I look forward to the rest of 1996."... Atea Martin practices commercial litigation in midtown Manhattan during the week. Weekends she and Allen look for a brownstone in Brooklyn.... Living in Washington, D.C., Susan Menzer Kluger looked forward to a summer off from work with maternity leave after the arrival in May of a sibling for Daniel (2).... With her husband job hunting and a possible post-doctoral fellowship in Rochester, N.Y., Kimberly Miller LaCelle says a move from Shaker Heights, Ohio, would bring them nearer to many family members.... With a "hello" to all the Bates friends he hasn't seen in many years, Gregory Otis is busy with his law practice in Morristown, N.J., and with tennis, golf and travel. Wife Felicity is a certified personal property appraiser and works part time at an auction house. They live in Mendham.... In their spare time Sheri and Jeffrey Pasco travel, garden and enjoy baby Mikayla. Jeffrey has raced sailboats in Narragansett Bay for four years, crewing on two national championship boats.... Jeff Porter is a litigator focusing on environmental law at the Massachusetts firm of Mintz Levin Cohn Ferro Glovsky and Popeo. (Egad!) Wife Jill has been elected partner in the Chicago-based law firm of McDemott, Will and Emer, practicing health-care law in the Boston office. A year ago they spent two weeks in Northern Italy.... Colleen Quint's business as an education law consultant is going well with several new clients and presentations at two panels and a national meeting. She and husband Bill Hiss '66 spent a week in Puerto Rico at the Caribbean Counseling Assn. to discuss "legal issues in admissions."... Robin Reynolds Starr catalogs paintings and prints at Skinners Auctioneers & Appraisers and teaches art history part time at Boston College.... In Brisbane, Australia, Mary Spilman Grosseholz looks forward to finishing her thesis for her M.A. degree in Asian and international studies. She enjoys the time she spends with 2-year-old Margaret. After graduation Mary taught English to Japanese students and met husband Klaus, also a teacher.... Lynne Tatirosian practices law in a small Boston firm that represents victims of violent crime. In August 1995, she and husband Michael Perez bought a house in Marblehead.... Leaving corporate America behind, Lisa Virello has a business called Necessities, a manufacturer's representative for designers of jewelry and accessories, selling wholesale to boutiques and galleries. One of her favorite designers is Mary Martin, sister of classmate Atea.... Life in London is "good" for Linda Tamkin Waller, who is a marketing research manager in Europe for American Express. She took an "unbelievable" mountain biking trip in Morocco and a trip to Thailand, living on a desert island with no modern conveniences, but "peaceful surroundings of palm trees, empty beaches, monitor lizards, fruit bats and toads."... An orthodontist in Rocklin, Calif., Rachel Wark Polgrean now is also a mom. Husband John has begun a law practice in the Rocklin area.... For the second year in El Salvador, Robin Waterwoman does literary development and coordinates a statewide literacy program. She trains peasant women to teach literacy in their villages and helps develop new literary materials on a national level. The work is hard, the poverty burdensome, and there are many disappointments as she tries to be "effective." Robin ran a marathon last year. She got back to Bates last November, stayed with Colleen Quint and Bill Hiss '66, and saw Danny Danforth, James Reese, and Jim Carignan '61. Robin also keeps in touch with Jeanne Cahill, Joe Zaia, Eric Bondy, Julie Vallone, and Gail Armstrong '86, who hoped to visit Robin in June. In April Robin accepted a paying job with World Learning, a U.S.-based nonprofit organization, and is committed through September of 1997. She will train volunteers in El Salavador.... Becca Watt finally has entered the "real world" with medical school and residency training behind her. She is a family practice doctor at the Minominee Tribal Clinic on the Indian Reservation in Keshena, Wis. Visitors are welcome -- "Come and whitewater raft on the Wolf River!"... Dan and Allison Webster Matlack have moved to Needham, Mass., where he teaches at Noble & Greenough.... Kate Whetten-Goldstein is a professor in health policy research at Duke Univ. She and Shan now have two wonderful daughters, who were born in China.

Ed Bell has been a postdoctoral student at National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, Md. He earned a Ph.D. degree in physics at the Univ. of California after a Fulbright fellowship in Freiburg, Germany. He usually works on atoms, and gave a paper at NIST on the use of ions to bombard the surfaces of metals, semiconductors and insulators. NIST works to promote U.S. economic growth by working with industry to develop and apply technology, measurements and standards. It is part of the Commerce Department's Technology Administration.... Catherine "Cocky" Schmitz is a senior publicist with Prima Publishing outside of Sacramento, Calif.... After "hanging out" in Santa Cruz for the winter, Debbie Smith returned last spring to work again this summer at the organic farm on Martha's Vineyard.... Andy Steinbach is a Ph.D. degree candidate in physics at the Univ. of Colorado. After some study at Dartmouth and work on policy issues in Washington, D.C., he returned to doing experimental solid-state physics. His general area of research is with Coulomb blockades.

At Pennsylvania State Univ.'s public broadcasting station, Rob Butler is an RV/radio producer, serving the central part of the state. He also runs his own instructional video production company, The Butler Did It Productions.... At Boston Univ. Lynn Dolberg is working on her Ph.D. degree in literature. Husband John Rossi works for Olive Jar Animation Studios. He earned his master's degree in 1993 from Chicago School of Architecture.... In Derry, N.H., Jane Sumner Richardson teaches science at West Running Brook Middle School. She earned her M.S. degree in education at the Univ. of Southern Maine in 1994.... After receiving her certificate (magna cum laude) from Castle College in early-childhood education, Allison Trowbridge Rowe has bought a three-bedroom home with her husband in Derry, where they always have room for fellow Batesies traveling through southern New Hampshire. In March 1996, Allison began a new job with the May Center in Arlington, Mass. As a home therapist/teacher, she works with two young boys who have autism. "This position combines my background in psychology and early-childhood education with my experiences as a preschool teacher, special-needs teacher, and family support. I may have finally found my niche," she said. Allison also planned to attend the June 1996 Stand for Children celebration in Washington, D.C.

Langley Gace has finished his master's degree in ocean engineering at the Univ. of New Hampshire and now works in the Seattle area for Ocean Spar technologies as an ocean engineer. He lives on Bainbridge Island in the Puget Sound area.... At Boston Univ. Tara Griffin is a Ph.D. degree student in French literature. She and husband Eric Iverson live in Newton. He is working on a Ph.D. degree in comparative literature at the Univ. of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.... Based in Washington, D.C., Jennifer Iba manages Fannie Mae's affordable housing offices around the country.
