Exocrine secretion: Secretion by means of a duct to a nearby target.
Endocrine secretion: Secretion directly into the bloodstream, without need of a duct.
Hormone: Any substance exhibiting endocrine secretion, transport by the bloodstream,
and showing a physiological effect elsewhere in the body.
Trophic hormone: A hormone that stimulates the production of another hormone.
Steroid: Any chemical with a structure similar to (and usually derived from) cholesterol,
featuring four conjoined rings.
Second messenger: A substance (usually cyclic AMP, abbreviated cAMP) released
by a membrane receptor in response to hormonal stimulation, and
traveling to the cell's interior to activate an important cellular function.
