St. Joseph's 75, Bates 71 BOBCATS FALL TO ST. JOSEPH'S, 75-71 STANDISH, Maine -- Senior guard Carolyn Brown recorded a game-high 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Saint Joseph's women's basketball team (7-1) to a 75-71 defeat of Bates College (4-3) in non-conference action on Saturday evening. Brown shot 7-of-11 from the field for the Monks and a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line. Junior guard Stacey Gelinas added 17 points and junior guard Sue Picard chipped in 10 in the win. Saint Joseph's jumped out to a 13-4 lead when Gelinas hit a jumper with 14:43 remaining in the first half. Bates then used a 19-5 run over the next seven minutes to grab a five-point lead (23-18). After five more lead changes, the score remained knotted at 33-33 at the intermission. In the second half, the Monks used an 11-5 run to take their biggest lead of the game (61-50) with 7:38 remaining in the contest. Bates cut the lead to as little as 63-59 with 4:24 left, but Saint Joseph's connected 8-of-10 free throws down the stretch to ice the game. Sophomore forward Carla Flaherty (Gorham, Maine) led the Bobcats for the second straight game with 17 points, while senior forward Kate McLaughlin (Laconia, N.H.) and rookie forward Justine Ferland (Old Town, Maine) notched 10 points apiece.
