Bowdoin 71, Bates 53 BATES FALLS AT COLBY, 91-79 WATERVILLE, Maine Colby College senior Damien Strahorn (Menlo Park, Cal.) had a fine all-around performance today, recording 34 points, seven rebounds, six assists and two blocked shots as the host White Mules (9-11, 2-4 NESCAC) won a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) game against the Bates College Bobcats (12-8, 0-5 NESCAC). Colby got off to a good start, jumping out to an 11-4 lead behind a 3-pointer and a hanging lay-up from Strahorn. The Bobcats answered, taking command of the first half with a 19-0 run, fueled by 3-pointers from first-year Brian Gerrity (Manchester, Maine) and Ed Walker (Roxbury, Mass.) and a traditional three-point play by junior Angelo Salvaggio (Portland, Maine). Strahorn brought the Mules back hitting three trifectas of his own and a pair of jumpers from inside the arc. First-year reserve Mike Rutherford (Ramapo, N.J.) contirbuted key minutes off thebench in the first, with a lay-up off a feed from Strahorn and a nice offensive rebound. Bates sophomore Ramon Garcia (Haverhill, Mass.) hit from downtown just before the break to put the Bobcats up 41-36 at the half. Bates senior Alex Wilson (Duxbury, Mass.), the team's leading scorer with 24 points, hit a 3-pointer and a jumper to put Bates up nine early in the second half at 50-41, but the Mules scraped their way back into the contest, as Patrick McGowan (No. Attleboro, Mass.) hit a three-ball and Rutherford converted a reverse lay-up into a three-point play to tie the game at 55. McGowan and Nick Loukes (Bangor, Maine) helped Colby to a 13-6 run for a 68-61 lead they would never relinquish. Wilson hit consecutive buckets to get the lead back to three at 68-65, but a 10-0 run fueled by six points from junior reserve Kevin Crosman (Bath, Maine) put the Mules up by 13, 78-65, with 5:06 to go. Colby hit 14-of-18 free throws in the second half to secure the victory. (taken from a Colby College press release)
