BATES MEN'S HOOPS DROPS FIRST NESCAC ROAD GAME, 92-73, AT MIDDLEBURY

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — The Bates College men's basketball team fell short in their first NESCAC road contest of 2001, 93-72, to Middlebury.

Middlebury (10-11, 2-5 NESCAC) led by as many as 13 pointswith 2:28 remaining in the first half. The Bobcats (13-8, 1-5 NESCAC) closed on a 9-2 run, including five points by Alex Wilson (Duxbury, Mass.) that sliced the lead to 39-33 at the break. A 13-4 run to open the second half by Middlebury put the Panthers up 52-37 less than five minutes in, and the Bobcats didn't get any closer than 12 points the rest of the way.

Four Bobcats scored in double figures, led by 15 from sophomore guard Matt LaPointe (Beverly, Mass.). Junior Ed Walker (Roxbury, Mass.) added 14 points, while Ramon Garcia (Haverhill, Mass.) and Billy Hart (Haverhill, Mass.) had 10 points each. Senior Rommel Padonou (Libreville, Gabon) led Bates with seven rebounds, five on the offensive glass.
