Course Description:
The object of this course is to conduct original research in marine soft-sediment ecology and to write and submit for publication a scientific paper based on our results. Each semester, work focuses on designing experiments and a field program to address a question of current interest concerning soft-bottom community structure and then implementing these plans on nearby intertidal mud and sand flats. This semester we will address the effects of digging for bait worms (Glycera dibranchiata and Nereis virens) on the distribution and abundance of the commercially important clam Mya arenaria. In addition to experimental design and field work, we will also read and critically evaluate primary literature, analyze data and prepare figures and tables, and learn to write scientifically. The goal of the course is to submit one scientific paper to a peer-reviewed journal by the end of the semester.
Reading:
Day, RA 1994. How to Write and Publish a Scientific Paper, 4th ed. Oryx Press. 223 pp.
Research articles are listed by authors last name in the syllabus and are on reserve in Ladd Library.
Class Meetings:
Class meets on Wednesdays beginning at 1300 for field work or discussion. Eight o'clock classes will meet only as needed. Field work is dependent on low tide and we will often work into the early evening.
Field Work:
Everyone is expected to participate in field trips which are scheduled for class times. Additional field work will be necessary and will be scheduled according to the field program we design. This additional work will be conducted independently by individuals or groups of students. For all field work, be prepared for cold, rainy weather and mud which will remove most footwear. Always bring rain gear, a sweater, wool hat, and long pants. Hip waders or wet suit booties work best in mud, though rubber boots will work if they are tight. I have several pairs of hip waders. Wet suit booties can be purchased at a local dive shop.
Grading:
Everyone is expected to contribute to field work, data analyses, writing and editing. Each student will write a different section of the paper and everyone will edit all sections.

Office Hours:
Monday 1330-1630. I try to always make my office hours, but occasionally they coincide with low tide and I am in the field. It is best to make an appointment. My office is always open and I am generally available for students anytime I am on campus and usually easily reached by phone at home when I am not.
