A Bhutanese Dzong, built in 1644, as drawn by Patterson in 2006
A fascinating account of the little known journeys of three great 18th and
19th-century artist travellers: Vasileio Gregorovic Barsky
was a Russian Monk and artist who, in 1745, visited Mount Athos and recorded
the life, landscape and architecture of the Holy Mountain. Samuel
Davis (1760–1819) was an artist, astronomer and a director of the
East India Co. In 1783 he visited
and recorded the then unknown land of Bhutan – the land of the Thunder
Dragon. Hercules Brabazon Brabazon
(1820-1904) was one of the finest watercolourists since Turner. He made numerous journeys recording the architecture of the
Muslim and Christian World.
In the course of many years spent following in the steps of these three
adventurous artist travellers, artist and architect Doug
Patterson created a new body of paintings and drawings which record three of
the worldÕs great faiths. From the architecture and landscapes of the Christian
Orthodox monasteries of Mount Athos and Meteora in
Greece to the Buddhist Dzongs of Bhutan, and the
Islamic mosques of North Africa and northern India. In this richly illustrated talk we will see how much and how
little has changed since the original intrepid 18th and 19th century journeys.
