Xenophontos Preparing for Millennial Celebration

© 1995 The Friends of Mt Athos

Friends of Mount Athos member Keith DeVries reports from his recent visit to the Holy Mountain:

Xenophontos, the monastery with which I am most familiar, was preparing for its 1,000th anniversary, which, as you may have heard, the fathers will celebrate late this coming summer. Among other things, they are finishing the the impressive complete painting of new frescoes in the larger of their two churches (a 19th century structure), and the cleaning of frescoes in the refectory is revealing the 16th-century originals that lay beneath later overpainting.
