- On July 1, 1998 I became 29 forever.
- I grew up in Chicago, Il. and lived in Chicago, Michigan, New York
and California before I moved to Lewiston, Me.
- 1998 in review:
- Lewiston had the coldest autumn I have ever experienced. But, yes,
the trees were beautiful. In December, I experienced my first snow squall.
I have done my best to compensate L.L. Bean's loss of Japenese customers
due to the Asian currency crisis with my own purchase of down, wool and
silk in response to the temperature. I cannot honestly say that I love
or hate the thermal extremities - I am too shocked to begin to assess the
data. You will note that Bean's earnings, despite the currency crisis,
did not decline below last year's. I was in complete denial about the snow
for most of the autumn. I have learned since then, that at least when it
snows, it is warmer. The ice storm thing was very, very bad. The concept
of freezing fog was hard to wrap my mind around, but it was nothing on
the ice storm. Spring has been much like a California January. Lots of
rain, but not too cold. We did have a few glorious days in April, but all
the natives assured me it would be 20 years before I'd see their like again.
June 1998 was an homage to the deluge genre of Indo-European literature.
I discovered that Maine gardens are completely dependent on June sun. The
12 tomatos and one pepper I harvested were excellent. The rest of the summer
was lovely. Autumn 1998 was heroic - virtually NO
snow; temperatures frequently testing the 50's. This prevented
us from our plan to "embrace'' the climate by taking up cross-country
skiing an snowshoeing. Oh well.
- 1999:
- We have begun the new year with an ice-storm.
- I'm an Assistant Professor of Classics at Bates College in Lewiston,
Me. and teach in the Department of Classical and Romance Languages and
the Program in Classical and Medieval Studies.
- I received my Ph.D. in Classics from Stanford
University in 1997 and my A.B. in Classics from University
of Chicago in 1980. Between college and grad school I received a J.D.
from the University of Michigan in 1986
and practiced law in Northern California. See the c.v.
for more details.
