Grammar Review
The Subjunctive Mood
- The subjunctive mood typically describes
feelings, thoughts, intentions, etc. (i.e., less than factual
assertions). It is very commonly used in dependent clauses but
also has independent uses. See A&G 157b, 162, 438-447,
480-485, 580, 592-593
- There are (thank god) only 4 tenses of the
subjunctive: the Present, Imperfect, Perfect and Pluperfect.
- Formation of the Present Subjunctive for
the First Conjugation
- Easy way: change the long a
(ä) to long e
(ë) in the endings
- Philologically correct way: change the long
a (ä) on the
stem to long e (ë) and
add endings.
