The Roman Senate could meet in any public consecrated building within
a mile of Rome, but typically would hold their meetings in the
Curia
Hostilia in the northwest corner of the
forum. The original building was destroyed by fire in 52 BCE. Julius
Caesar began the building of a replacement in 44 BCE which was
completed by Augustus in 29 BCE. Hence, the building whose ruins we
see today was called the Curia Julia by the Romans.
