THE BATHS

The city of Aquae Sulis is most famous for its baths. The Roman Empire built the baths after the conquest of Briton in CE 43.

Since only the rich could afford private baths many public baths were built. The baths in Bath were different from most baths in the Roman Empire because its heat came from a natural hot spring instead of from fries tended by humans.

The Baths of Bath

Each day 1,170,000 liters of water rise from the spring at 46 C. A certain springs were considered sacred and people did not bathe there but rather threw offerings to Sulis Minerva. Water from the spring entered into the baths beneath a stone.

Pipes carried excess water from the spring were it dumped into the river Avon. The same pipes used in Roman times are used today.
