3. 使い方 Usage
The 〜のにclause is the speaker-oriented
character. Therefore, if the main clause is a request, suggestion, question,
command or request for permission, only けれども can be used as shown in some
examples in B.
A. There is the speaker's expectation "because of (S1) , it should not be (S2),"
but the case / the truth is/was "in (S2)".
1)あの人は ハンサムなのに もてない。[can
be replaced by だが/だけれども/であるにもかかわらず]
Although he is handsome, he has no girlfriend. Why?
2)この肉は 高かったのに おいしくない/なかった。[ が/けれども (の)にもかかわらず]
Although this meat was expensive, this is not delicious. Why?
3)毎日 漢字カードを読んでいるのに、読む時 よく間違える。[が/けれども (の)にもかかわらず]
Although I read Kanji cards everyday, I make so many mistakes when I read. Why?
B. (せっかく)・・・のに、・・・the speaker's
emotions --disappointment, surprise, empathy, appreciation, critics, etc.
のに is the nominalizer の plus に "to", meaning "in contrast to the fact
that . . . "The clause expresses a highly presupposed, speaker-oriented action
or state. The speaker of S1 のに S2 is personally involved with the proposition
of S1. This personal involvement tends to create some emotive overtone. In colloquial
speech, if the content of the main clause is predictable, the clause often drops
as shown in (2). In this case, the sentence express a feeling of discontent
on the part of the speaker. 〜(の)にもかかわらず is used in writing, while
〜のに is used in speaking.
