The Design Argument for the Existence of God

1. We ordinarily explain objects and events by looking for their causes. (We explain the effect by noting its cause).

2. Similar effects have similar causes. (This is one of the fundamental suppositions of scientific inquiry as well as of our daily interactions with the world.)

3. The intricate functional structure of a machine is explained by the activity of an intelligent designer (e.g. Paley's pocket watch).

4. The world around us is like an amazingly complex machine. (Consider, for example, the marvelous physical structures of living things that suit them for life in their particular habitat.)

5. From this it follows that the world must have an intelligent designer, and this we recognize as God.
