I must say that my interest is diluted the more this seems like a 
quasi-commercial venture that likely serves some profit-making 
others, at our labor-expense. That may be overstated but it's just 
my reaction to visualizing the kiosk of computers in the mall--"what 
are they selling? Free? Let's go to gap.com."

I like the public (green, common) space associated first with the 
libraries. Come to think of it, the Auburn Library's outdoors is great 
isn't it? And once outdoor, free, wireless access makes the PR 
splash, both libraries provide great indoor space for more of the 
same.
