AVCNet, tonight

Hi all,

I'm down with the flu and won't make the meeting, tonight. So, it will
have to be moved to a different location unless Rob plans to attend.

If you get a chance, and there are some folks present (I believe Bruce
won't make it, either), here are a couple of agenda items:

 - there was a problem with the listserve, discovered and reported by
David S. It affected only UBC, initially, starting on 1/12, but then
affected all lists on or about 1/20. I restarted both the listserve and
mail servers on 1/21. The problem appears to be corrected. In the
process, I turned FTP services on the listserve machine off as they are
no longer needed.

 - the Feedback letter I forwarded to the list; should we participate?

 - buying a new iMac to run AVCNet on ($795 for a machine that's 50%
faster), using the current machine as a backup or running both
concurrently with either able to back up the other

 - whether to move services off the Mac OS and onto the Linux machine
? all will move easily except Usenet News; RumorMill on the Mac OS
has a slick e-mail<->news gateway function which Rob has found hard to
duplicate under Unix/Linux. On the other hand, we can easily make
listserve archives available on the Web, instead, and it's not clear that
very many people use the News function, anyway.

 - when/if to move the iMac back to the library (should have Rob's input
on pros and cons; it's been so long since we decided to house AVCNet at
the Library rather than at Bates, I don't remember the reasoning; any
chance we have minutes from that meeting, I wonder?)

 - contacting ELHS, LHS, Oak Hill HS and CMTC about Linux system
administrators as a work-study/internship opportunity (and, can we afford
to pay them something?)

If Rob does attend and the meeting is held at Bates, maybe he can set it
up so that I can participate in the "business" portion via speaker phone.
The number where I'm staying is 968-2777.

Stay warm,

Jim Hart
