AVCNet Board Meeting October 23, 2000, Lewiston Public Library, Lewiston, Maine 7:10 / Attending: Jim Hart, Bruce Hall, Rick Speer, Art Turley, Bob Kleckner, Lisa Giguere, Rob Spellman, James Allard, David Sysko. Art asked board to review critically the goals and operation of AVCNet. Same old people--not getting the possibilities done with existing labor pool. Membership stagnant or regressing--maturing, unable, tired. Slow growth (drain side only?) through free services, not contributing energy Recent years goals have been toward community non-profits, listservs, local info. David recalled Carrignan speech, questioning validity of enhancing community through technology. Art suggested organizational members using services be required to participate, contribute. Jim: publicity is a major missing piece. examples of difficulty of site upkeep, quality low profile last couple years--are there high profile community events left undone? Group boggled in tech, time to stop? Art prods with hypothetical motion for orderly shutdown plan. Re-focus on a couple key services? Offer less, based on resources at hand? Distributed e-mail without advertising is rare. Bob says he became involved because we provide a central location for finding community information, local web resources, communication services, and non-profit groups support, and that is valuable. Pruning business links would clean up the web site, operationally. Sensing support for continuing work, Rick moved that we make the next meeting a working session, maintaining web, performing further transfer to iMac. Art seconded. Approved unanimously. Art moved that we develop guidelines for connecting participation with organizational membership involvement within three months. Seconded and approved unanimously. Bruce thanked Art for bringing difficult, thoughtful issues to the table. Adjourned 9:10. Next (working) meeting: Monday, November 20, 2000, 7 p.m., at Bates College, 110 Russell St., Lewiston.
