The 1998 AVCNet Annual Meeting was called to order at 7:10 p.m. by Chair Rick Speer. Attending were Rick Speer, Chair, Jim Hart, Treasurer, Rob Spellman, and Bruce Hall. 1. The minutes of the previous Board of Director's meeting were approved with an amendment. Rob Spellman was among those present. 2. Election of Officers Rick Speer nominated the following slate: Chair: Bruce Hall Secretary: Dave Sysko Treasurer: Rob Spellman Board Members at Large: - Roger Fuller - Lisa Giguere - Jim Hart - Rick Speer - Art Turley After brief discussion, the slate was moved, seconded, and unanimously approved. Rick then mentioned that he had spoken to Steve Norman of the Auburn Public Library about becoming a Board member. Steve expressed some interest. Rick will follow up with him. Bruce Hall then took over the meeting in his new role as Chair. 3. Bruce Hall reported on the Northeast Computer and Education Expo. "Seemed like the attendance was light". "Many people with no computer or internet connection". Jim Hart worked Friday; Bruce Hall was helping get internet access working Saturday was covered by Lisa Giguere, Dave Sysko, Scott Bosse and Bruce Hall. Bruce got the computer display working which made a more effective demo. Discussion ensued about what to do next year. Most felt we should participate, with the possibility of doing a seminar rather than a booth as alternative to reduce the number of hours and, possibly, target a different group of people. 4. AVCNet Search Engine Jim H. reports that the server is up and running, indexing AVCNet's pages, including LPL's, every night. While this is way more often than necessary, it gives the indexer more of a workout. Rick S. volunteered to contact sites about letting us index them. Jim suggested the possibility of asking Roger Fuller to speak with all the AVEC technical committee members at one of their regular meetings as a way to reach a number of sites efficiently. Bruce H. volunteered to talk with Peter Bassett about indexing the City of Lewiston's site. Rick S. volunteered to try to recruit the Auburn School Dept. when he speaks with Pam Buffington on other issues. 5. Other server issues Jim H. reports continued problems with the web server software locking up and that he has had no response to 2 e-mail requests for help. After some discussion of alternatives, it was decided to try restarting the machine every night using the Energy Saver Control Panel. Jim also reports that the mail server is still running on the SE/30 and should be moved onto one of the newer machines, but it isn't high on the priority list because it has been very reliable. Rob S. said he would set up an "MX" record, making "avcnet.bates.edu" a backup mail server in case "mail.avcnet.org" should be "unavailable". Jim and Rob will get together to continue working on the news-listserver gateway issue, using the Macintosh software Rumormill. 6. Membership renewals Renewal notices via e-mail will be sent out before the database is handed over either to the new Treasurer, or to a new Membership Coordinator, if a volunteer can be found. Everyone wanted to assure that the notices would go out soon. 7. Other business Jim H. brought up the issue of the Community Calendar whose data will mostly expire by the end of this month. Rick S. felt we should take it offline. Bruce H. suggested keeping it for special events and dates only. After some discussion, the issue was tabled. Jim H. mentioned hearing from several people, at NCEE, about ONF. Rick S. called it a "flopping duck" which will soon die because it require special client software and doesn't offer integrated access to the WWW. The meeting adjourned at about 8:30 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Jim Hart, standing in for Dave Sysko who has an illness in the family. Please e-mail corrections to jhart@mail.avcnet.org or call 783-9104. --- Jim Hart, Server Administrator Androscoggin Valley Community Network "Working together we _can_ make a difference."
