Math s21 - Short Term 2002 Office: 2 Canham House (146 Wood Street) Phone: 786-8374 Instructors: Grace Coulombe and David Haines Textbook: The Structure of Proof: with logic and set theory, 2002, Michael O'Leary. We will cover most of chapters 1 through 6: topics include propositional logic; predicates and proofs; set theory; mathematical induction; number theory; and relations and functions. Format: Monday through Thursday will generally be a mixture of review of homework, student presentation of problem solutions, group work, and lectures on new material. Friday mornings will consist of an exam on the topics covered during that week. Homework: Homework will be assigned daily and discussed in the subsequent class. Students should be prepared to present problem solutions to the class. There will be no assignments over weekends. You are encouraged to work on the homework with other students. Be sure to write up your own solutions. The homework problems will not be collected. Additional Expectations: Attendence will be taken at all sessions. Every student is expected to present solutions to homework and group work problems on a daily basis. Exams: There will be two in-class exams and a two-hour cumulative final on the following dates:
Method of Grading: Grades will be based upon scores on the five weekly exams, class work, and class participation. If you expect to major in mathematics, your grade should be at least B-. Help Sessions and TutoringThe Mathematics and Statistics Workshop offers drop-in hours Monday through Thursday from 1- 4 pm at 146 Wood Street, Canham House 1 and nightly Calculus Help Sessions Sunday through Thursday from 7 - 9 pm at 146 Wood Street, Canham House 1.
