Math 111 - Mathematics across Time and Cultures
Email: gcoulomb@bates.edu Required texts: Required materials: a calculator. Class Meetings: Class meets daily Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 10:20am. There will be an additional "math lab" afternoon session from 1:00pm to 4:00pm in Carnegie 111 once a week. Specific dates will be provided on the first day of class. Homework: Homework will be assigned daily and collected and discussed in subsequent classes. You are encouraged to work on the homework with other students; however, copying another student's solutions is not permitted. Be sure to write up your own solutions. No late work will be accepted. If you think that you will be unable to complete an assignment on time please come see me to make alternate plans. Homework will be collected. Projects: Students will complete at least 2 individual projects. In lieu of a final exam, students will complete a final project in groups during the last week of class. Final project presentations will take place during the morning and afternoon sessions on Thursday, July 31. Tests: There will be two in-class tests. If there is any reason why you must miss a test, you must contact me in advance to make alternate plans. There will be no final exam. Grades The grade for Math 111 will be listed on your transcript as a Fall 2008 course. All Hughes Scholars are required to participate in a poster presentation during Parents' Weekend on Friday, October 3. Teaching Assistant: Hong Nguyen will be the T.A. for this course. He will offer regular nightly help sessions at the Math Workshop (146 Wood Street). Times will be arranged in class. Help Sessions and TutoringThe Mathematics and Statistics Workshop offers drop-in hours Monday through Thursday from 1- 4 pm at 146 Wood Street, Canham House 1 and nightly Calculus Help Sessions Sunday through Thursday from 7 - 9 pm at 146 Wood Street, Canham House 1.
