 Mastocarpus

 

Chondrus crispus, the Irish moss

 

Dulse, Palmeria palmata

 

The red alga Porphyra sp., commonly called laver in New england and Nori in Japan.

 

 

Chondrus in lower left and right corners.

The green alga is Ulva.

Newly established Fucus (a brown alga) can be seen to the right.

 

Bleached Chondrus

The banded red weed, Ceramium.

 

 

The crustose coralline red alga, Lithothamnium.

The "red algal zone" at the Giant stairs site. Mastocarpus and Chondrus dominate this area. In foreground is a bed of Ascophyllum (knotted wrack) by the shadow and Fucus spp. to its left.
