Figure 1. The green tube alga, Enteromorpha intestinalis, (A) growing on a boulder near the high tide mark and (B) near a supralittoral freshwater seep. Note how the alga appears to be unable to grow on the white quartz mineral inclusions. Other rocks in the area exhibited the same phenomenon.
