     Series: 1949 Image 1

Location: Range Ponds area, near Poland Spring, Maine. Rectangle drawn on image may be property boundary at that time.

     Series: 1949 Image 2

Location: Closer view of study area in Plains Road area, Poland, Maine. Rectangle drawn on image may be property boundary at that time.

     Series: 1964 Image 3

Location: View of study area in Plains Road area, Poland, Maine.

     Series: 1980 Image 4

Location: View of study area in Plains Road area, Poland, Maine. Range Pond State Park is newly formed in this image. The beach can be seen in the lower right corner, and a loop road to camping areas is near the center.

     Series: 1992 Image 5

Location: Broad view of the Range Ponds area, Poland, Maine. The change in land use is apparent in the park area. The old railroad bed running along the pond north shore has largely been overgrown, but is still visible. Note the alteration of roads at the confluence of Bailey Hill Road and Plains Roads since the 1949 image was taken.

     Series: 1992 Image 6

Location: Closer view of the study area. Note the canopy density in the study site area (between circle access road and Plains Road) and the prominence of the largepines bordering Plains Road along the study site.

     Series: 1998 Image 7

Location: Closer view of the study area. This series was taken after the Ice Storm of '98. Note the reduction in tree growth in the upper right half of the image as compared to the 1992 image 6 and the decrease in canopy density in the vicinity of the study area. At this time the mature canopy and subcanopy white pines were dying as a result of the Ice Storm damage and drought periods (likely caused white pine decline) in the mid-90's. By 2005 the total mortality of white pine in this area reached 60-65% of the subcanopy-canopy height pines.

     Series: 1998 Image 8

Location: Wide view of the Range Ponds area. This series was taken after the Ice Storm of '98. Note the esxpansion of Lower Range Pond due to damming at its outlet as compared to the 1949 Image 1 and 1964 Image 3 photos.
