Introduction

This hypertext discusses the nature of places today, defends contemporary places against some attacks, offers some suggestions and some more general philosophical considerations, and a number of narratives.

The text opens out into two large areas: expositions (yellow background) and narratives (blue background). Within these are many sub-areas, including some with more technical philosophic content. Some of the sub-areas are associated with outlines. Links in the text take you to different parts of the exposition or to different narratives. Many (but not all) of the links that jump to other areas are marked * or #.

At the bottom of each window there is a link to the general index of places and themes. There is also an automatically generated link to another text that is above the current text in the file hierarchy. Sometimes these two links will be the same. Sometimes there will be additional hand coded as well.

If you want to begin with the exposition with an outline, go to the general outline.

If you want to begin with some particular place or theme, go to the index, which offers links of many kinds.

Or you can begin

at a narrative

at an exposition

at a polemic.

There are three large concept diagrams.

In its present form this hypertext includes about 560 nodes and 1800 links, totaling about 100K words. About a quarter of an earlier version of the book manuscript is currently present in this hypertext.
