Surfaces

The underlying contradiction of tourism is the need to see beneath the surface when only a surface is available. (Lippard 1999, 8)

We should distrust this duality. There are always surfaces for the natives, too. Unless you take "reality" to be when things are forced on people. But if reality is broader, then we need to look at the lives of the tourists beyond their touring, at "the necessities that rule our lives."
