1. We use place and related terms (area, position, location, locale, site, etc.) in many different ways.
2. There is a basic distinction between an area and a place.
3. Other terms can be related to this basic distinction:
   1. textured and geometrical space
   2. locations and locales
   3. place in a larger cultural sense
4. These terms, compared with others,
   1. are not arranged in a hierarchicy
   2. are more flexible
   3. do not use "place" as an honorific term
